About us
Who we are
The organization’s origins date back to 1998, when its founder, Ray Buchanan, brought the dream of a world free from hunger to life, giving birth to Stop Hunger Now.
Over time, the U.S. headquarters were joined by those in South Africa, Malaysia, India, and the Philippines, which gradually evolved into Rise Against Hunger. The Italian branch was established in 2012 and, in just a few years, expanded its scope to cover the entire European territory.
“The awareness that hunger fuels exploitation, fosters inequality, and breeds injustice has driven Rise Against Hunger to maintain an unwavering commitment to developing programs and partnerships aimed at breaking this vicious cycle and ensuring sustainable development by harnessing each individual’s potential.”

Alberto Albieri, President of Rise Against Hunger Italia
Our Mission
Our goal is to design a pathway to growth and self-determination for those who receive our support, helping them gradually develop their potential.
As the main contact and operational base for Europe, Rise Against Hunger Italia carries out solidarity campaigns with partners both locally and across various European countries. These efforts provide assistance in emergency contexts, such as wars, epidemics, and natural disasters, facilitate recovery processes, and guide affected communities toward a gradual return to normal life.

What drives us?
Hunger impacts everything. For communities around the world, confronting hunger directly affects their livelihoods:
WELL BEING = PEACE OF MIND

Serving a meal to children at school is an excellent way to safeguard their health and well-being. In addition to being provided daily, the meals offered by Rise Against Hunger ensure a balanced mix of proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals—nutrients not easily accessible in the everyday lives of children and expectant mothers. Moreover, every day a child spends in school is a day of serenity and protection, sheltered from the many dangers that the streets can pose.
EDUCATION = AWARENESS

While the availability of a meal helps ensure consistent school attendance, the quality of the food provided guarantees the right nutritional elements for both physical and intellectual development, laying the groundwork for success in any educational path. Furthermore, our schools are required to admit boys and girls in equal numbers. This ensures that girls have access to education and allows boys to grow accustomed from an early age to seeing girls as companions in play, projects, and everyday life.
DEVELOPMENT = OPPORTUNITY

Rise Against Hunger addresses the concept of development in two distinct ways. In Sub-Saharan Africa, we support educational platforms and communities that, alongside school curricula, offer vocational training programs focused on sustainable agriculture. In Italy and throughout Europe, we aid families experiencing temporary hardship by working with partners who, in addition to distributing food assistance, can support them in dealing with housing emergencies, school dropout prevention, workforce inclusion, and providing tools to combat economic instability.
